Sweeny City Council Hires New City Manager

The Sweeny City Council hired a new city manager during its regular meeting Tuesday night. After a 30 minute closed session, the council voted to hire a man council members say has been a long time resident of the city.

The council voted 5-1 to hire the new manager. Neal Bess voted against the appointment. (This is a correction. We originally reported the vote was unanimous in favor of hiring the man. The Herald regrets the error. )

Though his name was publicly disclosed as part of the vote, Mayor Jeff Farley and other council members asked The Herald to wait to mention the name online until Wednesday night, after the man has had a chance to resign from his current employer.

“I know we just named him publicly, but I’d really like to give him a chance to let (his current company) know he’s giving his two week’s notice,” Farley said. “He just agreed to the offer today.”

Look for a post on Wednesday night with the man’s name, and The Herald expects to sit down with the new city manager for an interview soon.

Former City Manager Cindy King, left the post on August after 14 years on the city staff. The job has been vacant since then with other city staff members filling in various roles as needed.
